Chinese Herbal Medicine can be effective as a sole treatment modality or as a support or adjunct to western medical treatment for many illnesses.
There are three commonly used forms of Chinese Herbs:
- Decoction:
is tea brewed from the dry roots or leaves of herbs. High individualization is the feature of Chinese herbal medicine. Decoction, the oldest way of using herbs, usually makes them more potent, and is considered to be more effective than other forms. These take time to prepare as one must cook the herbs at home. The taste of herbal tea is not very pleasant for some people.
- Concentrated herbal powder:
is an extract of the herbs similar to instant coffee. It can be dissolved in warm water or juice.
- Tablets and capsules:
Taking them is as easy as taking regular pills. However, these pre-made tablets and capsules lack flexibility to individualize the prescription for each patient. They are generally considered to be the least powerful of all forms of Chinese herbs.
Your practitioner will give you an herbal prescription after your individual condition and situation is analyzed. After using the herbs for a certain time, it is necessary for your practitioner to reevaluate and modify your herbal prescription to match the changes in your condition.
Chinese Herbal Medicine is a system, which can promote health in the following ways:
- Prevention of illness
- Treatment of various conditions
- Enhance health and well-being
